Belarusian experts inspecting Polish military units for compliance with CFE treaty

A team of Belarusian military experts on July 8 began a four-day inspection at two military units in Poland to check their compliance with the Conventional Armed Forces in Europe (CFE) Treaty.

The purpose of the inspection is to verify the compliance of the available weaponry and equipment subject to limitation under the Treaty with the declared quantities, said the press office of the Belarusian defense ministry.

Signed on November 19, 1990 by 22 states, the CFE Treaty set limits on the amounts of tanks, armored combat vehicles, heavy artillery, combat aircraft, and attack helicopters that NATO and the former Warsaw Pact could deploy between the Atlantic Ocean and the Ural Mountains.

It obliges the parties to provide notifications and exchange information pertaining to its conventional armaments and equipment.

The purpose of inspections is to verify, on the basis of the information provided pursuant to the Protocol on Information Exchange, the compliance of state parties with weapons limitations.
